About Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth colored resin material is applied and hardened with a special light that ultimately bonds the material with the tooth. Dental bonding is considered

  • To repair decayed teeth
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • To close spaces between teeth
  • To make teeth look longer
  • To change the shape of teeth
  • For cosmetic reasons
  • To protect a portion of the tooth root which is exposed when gums recede

The lifespan of bonding materials for the teeth depends on the oral habits and how much bonding is used. Generally bonding material lasts around 3 to 10 years before needing to be replaced or redone, but in most cases dental bonding may last for a lifetime.

Dental Bonding Treatment Procedure

The treatment needs a little advance preparation but there is no need for the use of anesthesia unless the bonding is used to fill a decayed tooth that can cause a slight amount of pain. The surgery will take about 20 – 60 minutes per tooth to perform. The dentist will use a shade guide to select a composite resin color that is the nearest to match the color of the tooth to be bonded. The surface of the tooth will be roughened and a conditioning liquid will be applied which will help the bonding material adhere to the tooth. The tooth colored resin is then applied, molded and smoothed to the desired shape. Once ready an ultraviolet light or laser will be used to harden the material. When the material is hardened and ready, the dentist will trim and shape it and polish it to match the rest of the tooth surface.
