About Intra Corneal Ring Segments

Intra corneal ring segments (ICR) are also called INTACS, which is a type of eye surgery that incorporates the positioning of plastic rings on the cornea. This is done to influence the corneas shape so that the vision is improved. The rings are made of acrylic and are carefully inserted into the cornea.

Intra Corneal Ring Segment Surgery Procedure

Before the surgery starts, a special clip will be attached to hold the eyelid open throughout the surgery and local anesthetic drops will be dropped into the eye to numb the eye, so the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort. A very small incision will be made in the cornea to generate 2 tiny channels using laser. These channels are the locations that the acrylic rings will be inserted into. The rings can be adjusted and rotated to ensure that they are in the correct position to flatten the cornea. The ICR procedure will not take any longer than 15 minutes per eye.
