About Jaw Augmentation

Jaw augmentation (also known as Orthognathic surgery) is a plastic surgery performed to improve the appearance of the jaw. Jaw augmentation is a medical procedure which synthetic and biological implants are used to make the jaw more prominent. The procedure can create a greater sense of balance in a face and a more defined jaw. Usually patients undergo multiple procedures together with the jaw implant such as chin augmentation, cheek augmentation and Rhinoplasty.

Jaw Augmentation Procedure

Jaw augmentation surgery takes from 1 – 2 hours but if there are other surgeries done together with the jaw augmentation the duration can extend. The surgery is done with local anesthesia or an oral sedative. The incisions are usually made on the lower lip on either side. At the same time, the patient will be scrubbed with antimicrobial agent to reduce the risk of infection. The surgeon will follow the pre-marked incision line.

Depending on the type of procedure the surgery may involve removing the skin and the muscle from the skull, and removing excess skin or fat and placing implants in an ideal location. The implant can be either screwed or sutured into place. If screws are not used then the patient will have to wear a head wrap designed to keep the implant in a place until the surrounding collagen secures the implant. The incisions will be closed by applying tissue glue or using sutures and staples. Finally, a dressing is applied to protect the wounds, keep the tissue securely in place and reduce swelling.

Suitable Patients for a Jaw Augmentation

  • Patients having a jaw augmentation must be at a good health condition
  • Patients free from any illnesses
  • Patients do not have any bone disorders
  • Patients do not use any Accutane in the past 6 months
  • Both men and women patients are suitable to have a jaw augmentation and have to be ready both mentally and physically
  • Jaw augmentation is suitable for patients over the age of 18 to ensure that the facial structure is at or close to maturity

Before Jaw Augmentation

• Patients must stop taking any medication at least a week before the surgery

• Patients need to quit smoking and avoid alcohol for at least 2 weeks before the surgery and be at a good health condition

After Jaw Augmentation

• There are some dietary requirements after the surgery because there are incisions placed in the mouth. If the incisions are damaged it can cause an infection and recovery time will expand. Patients can have some difficulty chewing solids a few days from the surgery so eating more liquid will be very helpful.

• Using mouthwash after snacks and meals is advised.

• Patients can be sent home after a few hours from the surgery unless there are other surgeries performed with the jaw augmentation.

• There will be some swelling but cold compress a few times a day will help the swelling.

• Patients usually return to work or school 2 weeks after the surgery.

• Smoking and alcohol is restricted up to 4 weeks from the surgery.

• A compression garment may be advised to wear after the surgery to help recovery.

Risks of Jaw Augmentation

Just like every surgery there are some risks with Jaw augmentation like

  • Bleeding
  • Reaction to anesthesia
  • Infection
  • Hematoma – blood clot in a particular area
  • Seroma – watery portion of blood clot in particular area
  • Thrombosis – abnormal clotting
  • Asymmetry
  • Loss of sensation / numbness

Definition

Incision – surgical cut made in the skin during surgery or treatment

Local anesthesia – induces absence of sensation to a specific part of the body

Sutures – also called stitches, used to hold the tissues together

Compression garment – special clothing to provide extra support especially after surgeries

First day of Jaw Augmentation

The patients will attend a consultation with the surgeon and will be advised about the procedure and their condition. The patient will then be taken through a couple of tests that are required before the surgery. If desired, patients can spend the day to rest and attend the hospital the next day.

Second day of Jaw Augmentation

Jaw augmentation surgery will be performed. The surgery will be performed using local anesthetic. The surgery will take between 1 to 2 hours to perform; the duration of surgery can extend depending on the extent of surgery and other surgeries done with a jaw augmentation. Jaw augmentation is done on an outpatient basis. Once the surgery is over, the patient will be taken to a private room where they will be staying for resting. The surgeon will perform a check up and if they are approved to be in a good, healthy condition and the surgery results are all successful; the patients are advised with post treatment care requirements and are ready to be discharged from hospital to their settlements; unless there are other surgeries performed which require for a longer stay.

Third day of Jaw Augmentation

Patients will attend a post surgery appointment for a final check up and consultation. The patient will be advised on further medication. The dressings will be changed and if everything is right then the patient is ready to return to their destination, unless patients undergo other surgeries together with a jaw augmentation surgery, which require for them to stay longer.
