About liposuction

Liposuction, also known as Lipoplasty, Liposculpture and suction Lipectomy, is a cosmetic surgery that removes unwanted or excess fat from a specific area of the body. An instrument called Cannula is inserted under the skin and a high pressure vacuum is applied to the Cannula to remove the unwanted fat. Liposuction can be performed on nearly every part of the body where there is fat. Liposuction is mainly performed on the

• Abdomen

• Waistline

• Hips

Buttock

• Inner / outer thighs

• Above the knees

• Upper arms

• Under the chin

• Neck

• Back

Other surgeries can be performed the same time with a liposuction if wanted.

Types of Liposuction

There are several types of Liposuction techniques. These include:

Wet Liposuction – small amount of fluid with less volume than the amount of fat, which is going to be removed, is injected into the target area. The fluid helps loosen the fat cells and is suctioned out.

Super-wet Liposuction – this technique uses less liquid than tumescent Liposuction but about the same amount of liquid as fat is removed.

Dry Liposuction – there is no fluid injected before the fat is removed. There is a higher risk of bruising and bleeding than other techniques.

Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction – also known as ultrasonic liposuction, the Cannula is energized with ultrasound. This makes the fat melt away on contact, the ultrasound vibrations burst the walls of the fat cells emulsifying the fat and making it easier for suction. Longer incisions are needed for this technique and there is a risk of skin or internal burns.

Power assisted Liposuction (PAS) – uses a specialized Cannula with a mechanized system that rapidly moves back and forth allowing the surgeon to pull out fat more easily.

Laser assisted Lipolysis (LAL) – requires the use of tumescent fluid. A microcannula is inserted through a small incision to deliver laser energy and heat to subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin).

Tumescent Liposuction – several liters of saline solution with local anesthetic lidocaine and vessel-constrictor epinephrine (adrenaline) is pumped subcutaneously (below the skin) in the area that is to be suctioned. The fat is suctioned through small suction tubes called microcannula.

Liposuction Procedure

The surgery is usually done using local anesthesia and takes from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the type of surgery and other surgeries done together with liposuction. The surgeon will mark the area where the surgery is going to be performed. The patient will be scrubbed with antimicrobial agent to reduce the risk of infection. During the surgery, patient’s arms and legs will be wrapped or inserted into compression sleeves.

Suitable Patients for Liposuction

• Men and women who are over the age of 18

• Patients who are at a good health condition

• Patients who are pregnant are not able to undergo Liposuction surgery

Before Liposuction

• Patients must not eat or drink after midnight at the day of the surgery

• Patients must not drink alcohol from at least 24 hours before the surgery

• Medication, herbal supplements including herbal tea must not be used from 2 weeks before the surgery

After Liposuction

• Patients are usually sent home after the surgery unless there are other surgeries performed with a Liposuction which require for the patient to stay in hospital

• Area of the surgery will be wrapped up to reduce the risk of infection

• Bruising can occur around the incision site and disappear within a week to 10 days

• Patients must take any medication if prescribed by the doctor correctly

• Patients must keep themselves hydrated after the surgery by drinking plenty of liquid

• Patients must rest for the first couple of days

• Driving is restricted until the drainage tubes are removed

• Compression garment must be worn for 3 weeks and not taken off, unless having a shower, which is recommended daily after the drains have been removed. Before they are removed sponged bathing is recommended

Risks of Liposuction

Like every surgery Liposuction has some risks as well, such as

• Bleeding

• Infection – very rare to occur

• Reaction to anesthesia

• Bruising – patients with tendency to bleed have a higher risk of bruising

• Permanent color changes in the skin

• Uneven skin surface

• Inflammation – swelling can take up to 6 months to settle in some cases

• Thrombophlebitis – blood clots form in the veins

• Temporary numbness

First day of Liposuction

The patients will attend a consultation with the surgeon and will be advised about the procedure and their condition. The patient will then be taken through a couple of tests that are required before the surgery. If desired, patients can spend the day to rest and attend the hospital the next day.

Second day of Liposuction

Liposuction surgery will be performed. The surgery will be performed using local anesthesia. The surgery will take between 30 minutes to several hours depending on the type of surgery and other surgeries done together with liposuction. Once the surgery is over the patient will be taken to a private room where they will be staying for resting. The surgeon will perform a check up and if they are approved to be in a good, healthy condition and the surgery results are all successful; the patients are advised with post treatment care requirements and are ready to be discharged from hospital to their settlements unless there are other surgeries performed with liposuction which require for the patient to stay in hospital.

Third day of Liposuction

Patients will attend a post surgery appointment for a final check up and consultation. Patients are able to go on little tours around the city if they are feeling better and carry on taking their medications correctly. Patients will be advised on further medication. If everything is right then the patient is ready to return to their destination.

How long does Liposuction take?

The surgery usually takes from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the extent of surgery.

Most patients can return to work 2 weeks after the surgery.

Are there any risks of Liposuction?

Just like every surgery there are some risks as well, which are pretty rare like

  • Bleeding
  • Infection – very rare to occur
  • Reaction to anesthesia
  • Bruising – patients with tendency to bleed have a higher risk of bruising
  • Permanent color changes in the skin
  • Uneven skin surface
  • Inflammation – swelling can take up to 6 months to settle in some cases
  • Thrombophlebitis – blood clots form in the veins
  • Temporary numbness

Are there any risks of LASIK Eye Surgery?

Just like every surgery there are some risks like

  • Undercorrection – if the laser removes little tissue from the eye, desired result won’t be achieved
  • Overcorrection – if the laser removes too much tissue from the eye
  • Visual loss or change – rarely patients may experience loss of vision due to surgical complications
  • Astigmatism – caused by uneven tissue removal
