About Posthectomy

Posthectomy is the removal of the foreskin on the penis. Posthectomy is also known as Circumcision. Circumcision is very common for boys in certain parts of the world for religious reasons. Circumcision can also be a matter of personal hygiene. Posthectomy / circumcision can be done at any age from newborn boys to male adults.

Posthectomy Procedure

During a circumcision, the foreskin is freed from the head of the penis and then the excess foreskin is clipped off. The surgery is usually done using local anesthetic and takes up to 10 minutes for newborns and an hour for adults. Circumcision can be done in various techniques like, Gomco clamp, Plastibell and Mogen clamp.

Suitable Patients for Posthectomy

Posthectomy surgery is suitable for men and young boys from new born to adults. The surgery is usually done on newborn boys for religious reasons or health reasons like when the foreskin is covering the head of the penis and causing problems while erecting and at peeing. Adults also undergo Posthectomy for hygiene reasons and to reduce the risks of various diseases and to prevent penile problems occurring.

Before Posthectomy

• Patients will be advised by the surgeon when to stop having sex before the surgery

• Patients have to wait from 4 to 6 weeks to have sexual intercourse or to masturbate

• Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes such as briefs or pants

• Bandages will be removed after 24 to 48hours from the surgery
