About Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty (also known as nose job or nose surgery) is a cosmetic surgery done to improve the appearance of the nose. In Nose Surgery the nose can be made thinner, turned up, augmented, elongated or brought to balance with the rest of the face. Nose Surgery can also be done to improve the function of the nose by opening the breathing passages. There are various types of surgery such as

Septoplasty – surgery to reshape the septum, the vertical wall of the bone and cartilage between the nostrils, is done to ease breathing problems, which are caused by blockages. It’s often done to correct a deviated or crooked septum.

Tiplasty – procedure to reshape the tip of the nose and normally only involves the cartilage of the nose.

Rhinoplasty, Septoplasty and Tiplasty can be performed all together.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty usually takes 1 to 2 ½ hours. Other cosmetic surgeries such as a cheek implant, brow lift or face lift can be done at the same time of nose surgery but this will expand the duration of the surgery. The most common anesthesia used in Rhinoplasty is intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The surgery will start with the surgeon marking where the incisions will be made. Then the surgeon will follow the incision lines made and reshape the inner bone and cartilage. When the surgery is ending the incisions will be sutured.

Suitable Patients for Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is suitable for both females and males after the age of 14 when they have had their last grow spurt. Patients need to be at a good health condition and be ready both mentally and physically for the surgery.

Before Rhinoplasty

• Patients must stop taking any medication and herbal supplements at least 2 weeks before the surgery.

• Patients need to stop taking alcohol and quit smoking at least a week before the surgery and avoid taking caffeine 48 hours before the surgery.

After Rhinoplasty

• Rhinoplasty surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis so the patient is sent home same day of the surgery.

• The face can feel sore and tight a few days after the surgery.

• There will be bruising and swelling, which should subside after a few days. Cold compress around the nose can help reduce swelling.

• Depending on the type of surgery there can be gauze packed into the nose or have a cast on the bridge of the nose.

• Patients should avoid smoking and alcohol for at least a week after the surgery or until advised by the surgeon.

• Patients should sleep with their head elevated by at least 2 pillows.

Risks of Rhinoplasty

Just like every surgery Rhinoplasty has some risks as well such as

  • Infection – pretty rare but developed within the first few days after surgery
  • Bleeding – a large clot or pocket of blood called a hematoma can occur
  • Numbness (loss of sensation) – temporary loss of sensation on the skin of the nose and the mucosa lining of the nostrils
  • Reaction to anesthesia

Definition

Hematoma – blood building up outside the blood vessels

Incision – surgical cut made in the skin during surgery or treatment

Sutures – also called stitches, used to hold the tissues together

General anesthesia – variety of medications given to ensure unconsciousness, loss of control of reflexes. The patient is put to sleep to not feel any pain or discomfort.

First day of Rhinoplasty

The patients will attend a consultation with the surgeon and will be advised about the procedure and their condition. The patient will then be taken through a couple of tests that are required before the surgery. If desired, patients can spend the day to rest and attend the hospital the next day.

Second day of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty surgery will be performed. The surgery will be performed using general anesthesia. Rhinoplasty usually takes between 1 to 2 ½ hours to perform. Nose Surgery is done on an outpatient basis. Once the surgery is over the patient will be taken to a private room where they will be staying in hospital for resting. The surgeon will perform a check up and if they are approved to be in a good, healthy condition and the surgery results are all successful; the patients are advised with post treatment care requirements and are ready to be discharged from hospital to their settlements.

Third day of Rhinoplasty

Patients will attend a post surgery appointment for a final check up and consultation. The patient will be advised on further medication. If everything is right then the patient is ready to return to their destination, unless patients undergo other surgeries together with nose surgery, which require for them to stay longer. If a splint or cast is applied after the surgery, this can be removed on the seventh day of Rhinoplasty in Turkey or at the patients destination.
