About Gynecologic Oncology

Gynecologic oncology is a specialized area of medicine which is especially focused on cancer of the female reproductive system. Gynecologic cancer is, the cancer which has occurred in the female’s reproductive system. Each year the number of patients diagnosed with a type of gynecologic cancer is increasing rapidly. There is a huge amount of females who are treated for female cancer all around the world.Early diagnosis is very important in people’s lives for the prevention of illness and diseases. Gynecologic oncology includes:

Ovarian cancer – cancer which begins in the ovaries and is able to spread over the body.

Uterine cancer – also called womb cancer and emerges from the tissues of the uterus.

Vaginal cancer – any types of cancer that forms inside the vagina.

Cervical cancer–cancer arises from the cervix and is caused by abnormal growth of the cells.

Vulvar cancer – malignant, invasive growth in the vulva or outer part of the female genitals.

Each type of cancer comes with their own general risks and can affect every woman if they don’t get diagnosed early in time for treatment. Sometimes gynecologic cancer can give some symptoms but in some cases they may not be noticed or taken into action and every woman can show different symptoms, so a regular check-up is highly recommended even if different symptoms are experienced.  The risk factors for gynecologic oncology include:

  • Post menopause (women over the age of 50)
  • Endometrial Hyperplasia
  • Cervical dysplasia
  • Obesity

  • Women who have not been pregnant before

Gynecologic Oncology Treatment Procedure

Ovarian Cancer – this type of cancer is mainly treated with undergoing a surgery. The type of surgery will depend on the type and stage of the cancer. In some cases, hysterectomy is performed (removal of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes). Depending on the situation, the lymph nodes and tissues from the abdomen may be removed also. The procedure can be performed laparoscopically which means that it is a minimally invasive surgery.

Cervical Cancer – patients are often treated with a surgery and may often need a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus and cervix). Different types of hysterectomy may be needed depending on the extent of the cancer. Minimally invasive surgery will be performed or in some cases a laparoscopy or robotic gynecology oncology may be performed.

Uterine Cancer – patients are often treated with undergoing a surgery. The extent of the surgery will depend on, whether the tumor has spread or just located in the uterus. A hysterectomy will be performed and in some cases lymph nodes in the pelvis and abdomen may be removed.

Vaginal Cancer – patients are treated with a surgery to remove the cancer and sometimes a small amount of healthy tissue around the cancer is removed also. If the cancer is not spread, then a minimally invasive surgery can be performed. In some cases, the lymph nodes may be removed. If the cancer has spread then a hysterectomy will be performed to remove the ovaries, cervix and uterus.

Vulvar Cancer – patients are often treated with surgery. In some cases, when the cancer is not being able to removed completely, chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be performed.

Before Gynecologic Oncology Treatment

  • Patients will need to undergo several tests and examinations before the treatment
  • Patients will need to avoid smoking and alcohol 3 weeks before the treatment
  • Patients will need to take required medication informed by the doctor

After Gynecologic Oncology Treatment

  • Patients may need to undergo chemotherapy or radiation therapy after the treatment
  • Patients will need to attend routine controls to the doctor and kept under control
  • Patients must follow instructions given by the doctor and take medication as directed

Risks of Gynecologic Oncology Treatment

Like every treatment there is a risk of complications to occur including:

  • Tiredness
  • Bladder problems
  • Menopause
  • Bowel problems
  • Infection

First day of Gynecologic Oncology Treatment

The patient will attend a consultation and the treatment process will start. The patient will need to undergo certain tests and procedures for diagnosis. Once the procedure is done, the most suitable treatment will be performed. Depending on the treatment to be performed the patient will be informed and will need to attend a few more appointments. If patient has undergone surgery, they will be taken to a private room and need to stay in hospital for 3 to 4 days.

Fourteenth day of Gynecologic Oncology Treatment

If patient has undergone surgery, they will attend a post checkup. Tests may be performed and if there is no need for further treatment then the patient will be dismissed and can return to their destination. If further treatment is required, then they will be further instructed by the doctor.
