Devices used in Intra Corneal Ring Segment Surgery
During the surgery a Femtosecond laser device is used to create channels inside the eye for suction rings to be inserted and an ultrasonic pachymetryhe device is also used.
Intra corneal ring segments (ICR) are also called INTACS, which is a type of eye surgery that incorporates the positioning of plastic rings on the cornea. This is done to influence the corneas shape so that the vision is improved. The rings are made of acrylic and are carefully inserted into the cornea.
Before the surgery starts, a special clip will be attached to hold the eyelid open throughout the surgery and local anesthetic drops will be dropped into the eye to numb the eye, so the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort. A very small incision will be made in the cornea to generate 2 tiny channels using laser. These channels are the locations that the acrylic rings will be inserted into. The rings can be adjusted and rotated to ensure that they are in the correct position to flatten the cornea. The ICR procedure will not take any longer than 15 minutes per eye.
• Patients must not wear contact lenses from a week before the surgery
• Patients must arrange for a friend or relative to come to the surgery and help the patient after the surgery
• Patients can return to their old routine within a week after the surgery
• The eye can feel itchy and patients can feel a small amount of discomfort in the eye which can be prevented by using the drops prescribed by the ophthalmologist
Just like every surgery, intra corneal ring segments have some risks to such as
Anesthetic drops – drops given to numb to eye so the patient does not feel any discomfort during the surgery and being awake
Cornea – transparent part of the eye covering the iris and pupil
Incision – surgical cut made in the skin during surgery or treatment
The patient will attend a consultation with the ophthalmologist and will be advised about the procedure and their condition. The patient will then be taken through a couple of tests that are required before the treatment. If desired, patients can spend the day to rest and attend the clinic the next day.
The Intra Corneal Ring Segment Surgery will be performed. The surgery will take around 15 minutes to perform. The surgery is done using a Femtosecond laser device to create channels in the eye for suction rings to be inserted and an intra operatice ultrasonic pachymetryhe device is also used. Once the surgery ends and the patient feels better, they can return to their settlement with someone accompanying.
Patients will attend a post surgery check up and consultation. If they are approved to be in a good, healthy condition and the surgery results were all successful; the patients are advised with post treatment care requirements and are ready to go back to their normal routine.
