About LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is an eye surgery that corrects certain vision problems and reduces or eliminates the need of glasses or corrective lenses. The surgery works by reshaping the cornea, so the light traveling through is focused properly onto the retina. LASIK Turkey is the most common type of refractive surgery. LASIK eye surgery is performed using a laser that is programmed to remove an amount of tissue from the cornea. With each pulse of the laser beam a small amount of corneal tissue will be removed. Laser allows the surgeon to flatten the curve of cornea or make it much steeper.

LASIK Eye Surgery Procedure

The surgery usually takes up to 30 minutes or less. Numbing drops and other medications will be used in the eye to relax the patient. The patient will lie on their back in a reclining chair. The eye surgeon will use an instrument to hold the eyelids open. A suction ring will be placed on the eye before the surgeon cuts the corneal flap, which may cause a feeling of pressure and the vision, may get dimmer. The surgeon will use a small blade or cutting laser (when cutting laser is used, it is called IntraLASIK or ILASIK eye surgery. The cornea is cut using a laser which reduces the amount of pain and harm) to cut a hinged flap just as big as a contact lens from the front of the eye. The surgeon will then use laser to reshape specific parts of the cornea. Once reshaping is done the flap is folded back into place and heals without a need for stitches. Patients will be asked to stare at a point of light that will help the eye fix while the laser reshapes the cornea. Patients can sometimes detect an odor once the laser removes the corneal tissue, which is described as the smell of burning hair. LASIK surgery can be performed on both eyes on the same procedure.

Suitable Patients for LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK eye surgery can be an option for patients if they have any one of these vision problems:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia) – the eyeball is slightly longer than normal or when the cornea curves sharply. The light rays focus in front of the retina and blur distant vision. Objects that are closer can be seen clearly but those that are away can’t be seen.
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia) – eyeball is shorter than average or the cornea is too flat that light focuses behind the retina instead of focusing on it. This makes the near vision and sometimes the distant vision blurry.
  • Astigmatism – the cornea curves or flattens unevenly. Astigmatism disrupts focus of near and distant vision.
  • Both male and female patients who are at good health condition
  • Patients who are healthy both mentally and physically
  • Patients over the age of 18

Before LASIK Eye Surgery

  • Patients will be taken through some tests before the surgery. The eye will be valuated by using a wavefront guided technology and the shape and contour of the cornea will be measured
  • Patients must stop wearing soft contact lenses 7 days before the surgery, toric lenses 2 weeks before the surgery and rigid gas permeable lenses 3 weeks before the surgery
  • Patients must arrange for someone to come to the surgery with them and to assist them after the surgery

After LASIK Eye Surgery

  • Patients may experience a burn in the eye after the surgery, the eye may itch and be watery
  • Patients may have a blurred vision and may experience a slight pain
  • Patients will be prescribed medication and eye drops to use after the surgery
  • Patients may be asked to wear a shield over the eye at night until the eye heals
  • Vision won’t be clear straight away after the surgery. It will take about 2 to 3 months after the surgery for the eye to heal and vision to stabilize
  • Cosmetics can start to be worn after a few weeks from the surgery

Risks of LASIK Eye Surgery

Just like every surgery there are some risks like

  • Undercorrection – if the laser removes less tissue than needed, desired result won’t be achieved
  • Overcorrection – if the laser removes too much tissue from the eye
  • Visual loss or change – rarely patients may experience loss of vision due to surgical complications
  • Astigmatism – caused by uneven tissue removal
  • Glare, halos and double vision – may be difficulty seeing at night. Glare or halos or double vision can occur around bright lights
  • Dry eyes – LASIK can cause a temporary decrease in tear production. Eyes can feel dry up to 6 months from the surgery. Eye drops can be used to help
  • Infection

Definition

Anesthetic drops – drops given to numb to eye so the patient does not feel any discomfort during the surgery and being awake

Cornea – transparent part of the eye covering the iris and pupil

First day of LASIK Eye Surgery

The patient will attend a consultation with the ophthalmologist and will be advised about the procedure and their condition. The patient will then be taken through a couple of tests that are required before the treatment. If desired, patients can spend the day to rest and attend the clinic the next day.

Second day of LASIK Eye Surgery

The LASIK Eye Surgery will be performed. LASIK surgery usually takes up to 30 minutes and sometimes can last shorter. The surgery can be performed on both eyes on the same day if needed. Once the surgery is over and the patient is feeling better, the patient can then go to their settlement with someone accompanying.

Third day of LASIK Eye Surgery

Patients will attend a post surgery check up and consultation. If they are approved to be in a good, healthy condition and the surgery results were all successful; the patients are advised with post treatment care requirements and are ready to go back to their normal routine.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey?

The recommended stay in Turkey for LASIK Eye surgery is 2-3 days including consultation before the surgery and after the surgery.

Who can have LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK surgery can be performed on patients with

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism

LASIK surgery can be done on both males on females over the age of 18.

When can I return to work?

Patients can return to work 2 days after the surgery.
