Orthodontic treatment is used to improve the appearance, function and position of crooked or abnormally arranged teeth. In orthodontic treatment, the teeth can be straightened and moved into a better position. An orthodontist who is specialized in the area and has a dental degree does orthodontic treatment. Orthodontics uses braces to correct the positions of the teeth. The treatment duration will depend on the situation but is usually between 18 and 24 months.
Braces are bonded directly onto each tooth’s surface. It’s also possible to get clear invisible trays, which can straighten teeth without using traditional braces and wires. Invisible trays are a good option for patients who require simple orthodontic work. Invisible trays are custom-made clear removable trays that put pressure on the teeth and move them gradually into their correct position. The four main appliances used in an orthodontic treatment are
Fixed braces – are non-removable braces, which are made up of brackets that are glued onto each tooth and linked with stainless steel wires.
Removable braces – are plastic plates that cover the roof of the mouth and clip onto some of the teeth.
Functional appliances – are a pair of removable plastic braces that are joined together or designed to interact together, and they fit onto the upper and lower teeth.
Headgear – can be used with an orthodontic treatment. It is worn at night to help the repositioning of the teeth.
Before the treatment, the orthodontist will evaluate the need and what type of treatment is needed and the duration of treatment. Pictures and a Panoramic and Ceph X-ray of the teeth will be taken. On the first appointment, spacers and bands will be inserted between the molar and bicuspid teeth to make space for orthodontic bands. The patient will be seen in periodic intervals during the procedure and on the next appointment the spacers will be removed and the teeth will start getting prepared and brackets will be cemented onto each tooth and wires will be placed between the brackets. The treatment usually takes up to 2 hours to perform.
