About Posthectomy

Posthectomy is the removal of the foreskin on the penis. Posthectomy is also known as Circumcision. Circumcision is very common for boys in certain parts of the world for religious reasons. Circumcision can also be a matter of personal hygiene. Posthectomy / circumcision can be done at any age from newborn boys to male adults.

Posthectomy Procedure

During a circumcision, the foreskin is freed from the head of the penis and then the excess foreskin is clipped off. The surgery is usually done using local anesthetic and takes up to 10 minutes for newborns and an hour for adults. Circumcision can be done in various techniques like, Gomco clamp, Plastibell and Mogen clamp.

Suitable Patients for Posthectomy

Posthectomy surgery is suitable for men and young boys from new born to adults. The surgery is usually done on newborn boys for religious reasons or health reasons like when the foreskin is covering the head of the penis and causing problems while erecting and at peeing. Adults also undergo Posthectomy for hygiene reasons and to reduce the risks of various diseases and to prevent penile problems occurring.

Before Posthectomy

• Patients must tell the surgeon about any illnesses such as HIV or medical condition

• Patients will be advised by the surgeon when to stop having sex before the surgery

• Patients must stop smoking a week before the surgery as smoking slows down healing

After Posthectomy

• Healing usually takes within 7 to 10 days

• The tip of the penis can be sore at first and may look red or swollen

• Patients have to wait from 4 to 6 weeks to have sexual intercourse or to masturbate

• Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes such as briefs or pants

• Bandages will be removed after 24 to 48hours from the surgery

  • Irritation of the glans
  • Meatitis (inflammation of the opening of the penis)

First day of Posthectomy

The patients will attend a consultation with the surgeon and will be advised about the procedure and their condition. The patient will then be taken through a couple of tests that are required before the surgery. If desired, patients can spend the day to rest and attend the hospital the next day.

Second day of Posthectomy

Posthectomy will be performed. The surgery will be performed using local anesthesia. The surgery will take around 10 minutes to perform for babies and children and up to an hour for adults.  Once the surgery is over the patient will be taken to a private room where they will be staying when in hospital for resting. The surgeon will perform a check up and if they are approved to be in a good, healthy condition and the surgery results are all successful; the patients are advised with post treatment care requirements and are ready to be discharged from hospital to their settlements.

Third day of Posthectomy

Patients are advised to continue resting at their settlements. Patients are able to go on little tours around the city if they are feeling better and carry on taking their medications correctly.

Fourth day of Posthectomy

Patients will attend a post surgery appointment for a final check up and consultation. The bandages will be removed and the patient will be advised on further medication. If everything is right then the patient is ready to return to their destination.
