About Teeth Whitening Treatment

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry procedure which improves the look of the teeth. The procedure can give patients a brighter smile especially if they have stained or darker colored teeth. Most of the color of the teeth comes from DNA. Whitening can’t make a complete color change but can lighten the existing shade.

Teeth Whitening Procedure

Professional Teeth Whitening – The procedure will start with a cheek retractor being inserted into the mouth to expose the esthetic zone teeth. Then a liquid dam or hardening resin will be put onto the gum tissue to prevent any irritation. Bleaching gel, which contains hydrogen peroxide, will be applied to the teeth and kept on from 15 to 30 minutes. An intense blue light will be focused onto the teeth to activate the bleaching process. The bleaching gel will be suctioned or washed off and a new fresh gel will be applied for another 15 to 30 minutes. Once the last gel is applied the cheek retractors will be removed and the patient will rinse their mouth. The teeth can whiten up to 8 shades lighter. If a satisfactory level of whitening is not achieved then the procedure can be redone at a future date.

Laser Teeth Whitening – a laser will be used to activate the chemicals in the whitening material for a faster treatment and can make the teeth lighter up to six shades. A rubber dam is used to protect the gums before the bleaching powder is painted onto the teeth and activated using the laser. The procedure can take about an hour to perform.
