About Dental Implant Treatment

Dental implant treatment is a procedure, which replaces the roots of the teeth with a metal screw like post and replaces damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth which looks and functions exactly like a real one. Dental implant treatment is an option for patients as an alternative to dentures or bridgework, which doesn’t fit in well. How dental implant treatment is performed is totally up to the type of implant and the condition of the jawbone. Dental implant treatment is made of several stages and may need several procedures. Dental implants are placed in the jawbone where they serve as a root of the missing teeth. Titanium in the implant fuses with the jawbone so the implant won’t slip, make noise or cause any bone damage.

Suitable Patient(s) for Dental Implant Treatment

Dental implant is suitable for patients if they

  • Have one or more missing teeth
  • Have a jawbone which has reached full growth
  • Have an adequate bone to secure the implant
  • Are in good health condition and have no condition to affect the bone from healing
  • Are unable or unwilling to wear dentures
  • Want to improve their speech

Dental Implant Procedure

Before the treatment the patients will have to go through some processes like

Comprehensive Dental Exam – dental X-rays will be taken and models of the teeth and mouth will be made

Treatment Plan – depending on the situation factors like how many teeth needed and the condition of the jawbone, a treatment plan will be made. Planning will need a variety of dental specialists including a dentist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is specialized in conditions of the mouth, jaw and face and periodontist who is a dentist, working on the structures that support the teeth.

Dental implant treatment is performed on an outpatient basis and in stages

  1. The damaged tooth is removed
  2. Jawbone is prepared for the treatment– may involve bone grafting
  3. Once jawbone has healed the oral surgeon will place a dental implant metal post into the jawbone
  4. Patient will go through a healing process which can take a few weeks
  5. The oral surgeon will place the abutment – an extension of the implant metal post and then followed by the crown

This process can take a month or 2 months from start to end and maybe longer depending on the extent of treatment.

If the jawbone is not thick enough then bone grafting may be needed before the implant treatment. Bone graft can create a solid base for the implant. During bone grafting a piece of bone is removed from another part of the jaw or the body and transplanted to the jawbone.

During the treatment, in order to place the dental implant, the surgeon will make a cut to open the gum and expose the bone. Holes will be drilled into the bone where the dental implant metal post is going to be placed. Once the metal implant post is placed in the jawbone osseointegration will begin. This is the process where the jawbone grows into and becomes united with the surface of the dental implant. This process can take up to six months and this will provide a solid base for the new artificial tooth like roots. Once osseointegration is complete additional treatment may be needed to place the abutment. This minor treatment is done with local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. To place the abutment

  • The oral surgeon will reopen the gum to expose the dental implant
  • The abutment will be attached to the dental implant
  • The gum tissue is then closed around but not over the abutment

Once the abutment is placed the gums have to heal for a week or 2 weeks before the artificial tooth can be attached. The dental specialist and patient can pick from two types of artificial teeth to use

Removable Implant Prosthesis – similar to conventional removable denture, it contains artificial white teeth surrounded by a pink plastic gum. It is mounted on a metal frame, which is attached to the implant abutment and snaps securely into place. It is easily removed for repair or cleaning.

Fixed Implant Prosthesis – the artificial tooth is permanently screwed or cemented onto an individual implant abutment. The tooth cannot be removed for cleaning or during sleep. Each crown is attached to its own dental implant.
